#4 USC's 1974 Pac-8 title sent them to the Rose Bowl to face the Big Ten champion, 2nd-ranked Ohio State. With OSU leading by 7 going into the final minutes of the game, Pat Haden threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Johnny Mckay in the corner of the endzone. Instead of kicking the extra point and taking the tie, Coach John McKay decided to go for two, and Haden completed another pass for the conversion. USC's 18-17 win, coupled with Alabama's loss to Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl, vaulted them to #1 in the UPI poll and their second national title in 3 years. Oklahoma was #1 in the AP poll, but was on probation at the time and so was not included in the UPI poll.

  • @bbigjohnson I think you are wrong about #15 Dave Farmer being George Farmer's father. The USC media guide shows George Farmer's father was also named George and he went to Southern University and played for the LA Rams in the early 1980s. But I do remember Allen Carter, just forgot his number.

  • USC had called a timeout, coaches decided to run the 'X Corner"route., Haden agreed The X was split-end J.K.McKay.He didn't think he could beat the defender on the corner route. They told him to shut up get in the huddle and run the corner route. It took awhile for him to get open, Haden's pass had to be perfect- it was.Tom Kelly's radio call of 2 pt conversion is one of my favorites.McKay and his son received a death threat in the days prior to this game. It was taken seriously by the FBI.

  • @sportsoracle Oh the Big-10 still "gets it" all right, especially from USC.

  • @Johnhoulgate As richstout correctly noted #21 is Allen Carter and #15 is Dave Farmer. Dave Farmer's son is a Soph. wide receiver on the current USC squad #88. Under John McKay, "the wedge" on USC's kickoff return team was made up of all running backs.

  • @EWGFus3r Tribute to Troy.

  • #21 was Allen Carter. Great running back.

  • Who was #15 and #21 running the ball? I recognized AD and Ricky Bell, but I don't know who those other guys were.

  • Looking at the late great John McKay back then and looking at spoiled brat Lane Kiffen. Too bad McKay cannot be reincarnated and bought back to USC.

  • whats the song at the beginning?

  • Just wanted to take another opportunity to listen to this great song.
