For all my beginner jazz students, here's a basic jazz rhythm to get you going. It's demonstrated over Cmaj7 Am7 Dm7 G7. For more piano improvisation tips, head to www.quaverbox.com

  • You didn't play a Cmaj7 you play a C6 (you said C6 but C6 isn't the same as Cmaj7) and you didn't play a Dm7. Dm7 is d,f,a,c and you play f,a,c,e which is Fmaj7

  • @marcatoStrings When improvising, chord symbols aren't always treated literally. If I played DFAC every time I saw a Dm7, my playing would become quite lifeless. Dm7 is often modified to include a 9, ie FACE (I had the D in the LH) which makes it sound richer. Technically, that would make it a Dm9, however often the Dm7 symbol is still used so that you have the choice of playing it as Dm9 or Dm11 or Dm7b5, etc. Cmaj7 and C6 have similar qualities and can often be used interchangeably.

  • so is jazz mainly of 7 chords

  • @ken1626 Indeed it is!
