very astute observation. This is the original version and it was meant to be song at exactly this pace. Not any slower and not any faster. The emphasis is on the object of his fever not him as the subject. You put your finger right on why I never liked Peggy Lee's version nor any of the subsequent versions.

I remember this version from when I was in the Navy.

Unlike most of you here, I also liked Peggy Lee's version.It was a different experience for me from this original version. I thought Paggy was more seductive, for the male.

But then, I am easy to please. I like most of the covers of this great song.
