my little girl came home from school one day and told me about how she and her friend were naming the trees in the schoolyard... these two names stood out to me and i promised i'd write a song with them....

Out in the field where the children play,
Lilly Buttercup spends her days.
The breeze it blows, she rocks and sways,
Lilly Buttercup catches birds with her steady gaze...

Out on the corner where the cars go by,
Old Sad Sorrow hung his head and cried.
There was a time and there was place
when Sad Sorrow caught darling Lilly
with his steady gaze.

Oh, Sad Sorrow- heed these words, we pray...
There'll be no tomorrow
if you bury that woman today.

Now little Lilly, in her little way
loved Sad Sorrow with his doting gaze,
how could she know from across the way
that Old Sad Sorrow made darlin' Lilly his saving grace...

Oh, darlin Lilly, beware of love unsung
those plans you made so sweetly
can so easily come undone.

Plans undone, beware of love unsung...
Love unsung, beware of plans undone.

From the shadows, with his heart laid bare,
Ol' Sad Sorrow put aside his cares...
Lilly paused, so unaware
of the love that stared her down with it's deadly glare...

Plans undone, beware of love unsung...
Love unsung... beware of plans undone.

  • This reminds me of Buddy Holly's "Well All Right"...it's driving without being overtly so, and like him, you command people's attention. The melody is wonderful. It says a lot about life. I like how you sing the vocal straight on, without a lot of embellishment, kinda like Monkeyless John does...and like I do when I sing a story song. Story songs have enough in them. To me, vocal tricks just distract from the words. Great lyrics, very vivid...and I love your voice, it's so unique and nice!
