You may be excused for making the mistake to think that these arguments were used to oppose gay marriage.
In fact these were the reasons interracial marriage was protested.
These were the reasons argued back in the 1870s
That was over 140 years ago.
Sad to see we haven't come far since then.

Discrimination of any kind is unacceptable. Putting fears into the minds of young teenagers is unacceptable. Hatred for your fellow man is unacceptable. It all ends here.

We are Equal. We are not afraid.

It will only be a matter of time till this period of inequality is behind us, then we will need to explain to our children what took us so long to get there? The more times you give and take away right, the stronger we get.

Why are you afraid of us?
We are not afraid of you.

@polaroidsky There are also social and legal reasons why polygamy is a bad idea. If the husband dies, which one of the wives gets custody of the children, property, etc. It would make legal issues exponentially more complex. Also, the custom has been to ostracize the younger men, so the older men would have access to all the women (or usually teenage girls). Polygamy is not an equitable arrangement either socially or legally. That's why it's reasonable to ban it, but not same-sex marriage.

@polaroidsky I don't know of any group that is rallying for polygamy. Even Mormons aren't interested in pursuing the issue. They donated millions to the Yes on 8 campaign. If they actually supported polygamy, they would also have to support same-sex marriage to make their case.

@hbfarker : Not to say that people will inevitably vote for polygamist marriage, but there are indeed people who would like for polygamist marriage to be legal today in america. So what is to stop them if they do ask for that? I cannot think of a reason, can you?

1.Event X has occurred (or will or might occur).

2.Therefore event Y will inevitably happen.

I never meant to imply that people would inevitably marry hamsters if gay marriage was permitted. I was simply following the logical steps to see what one could reasonably argue for if gay the culture defined marriage. (i.e. how marriage should be defined)

@hbfarker : (1) May I suggest that you look up "Reductio Ad Absurdum". It is a common method used in logic, whereby you accept the initial rational (e.g. culture defines marriage) and follow it's logical steps; if the end result is absurd (culture could redefine marriage as being between a man and a hamster) then you can reject the initial rational.

@polaroidsky -- Look up "slippery slope argument". No one is asking for polygamous marriage. No one is asking for man/hamster marriage. Straight people banned polygamy in 1899. If straight people want it back, that's up to them. The only difference between opposite-sex marriage and same-sex marriage is the gender of the people. It has nothing to do with multiple partners, or animals, or computer characters. Bans on interracial marriage had nothing to do with those things either.
