"...pray to God that our side is right" means that those who fight their country behind them hope that their cause is just for what they fight for most of them believe of what they would die for. The truth of what they are fighting for in sake of their country's cause will truly and eventually show in the aftermath.

They don't know what they are fighting for, but they believe what they are fighting for. Hats down in respect for thbrightday's father.

He is actually right. Most soldiers don't even know what they are fighting for, that's what Shadows says in the chorus:

"Fight for honor, fight for your life; pray to God that our side is right"

They are just doing what they are told.

I know it's wrong to say, but if we were to start drafting people into the Armed Forces again, I would laugh once you were shot. As would thbrightday.

Yeah I see that as the main interpretation, but the lines say "I walk your land but don't belong/Two million soldiers can't be wrong" *could* also mean the person is an outcast and everyone treats him like it so it can't be wrong. The far from home part could be out of the comfort zone, or "home", fighting someone else's battles for them, and the third one could imply every man for themselves. But like I said, it's probably about war, just adding a possible hidden meaning into the mix :)
