This debate won't go away. And every time is comes up, its because more and more authorities in the Church keep speaking out insisting on proper reverence for the Eucharist.

  • I guess what I don't understand & please forgive my ignorance on this, but why doesn't our Holy Father the Pope make this so, no IFs, Ands OR buts about it! It just has to be that ALL Parishes MUST give you Holly Communion Kneeling & on the tongue, the kneeling rails should be brought back and that's it, this is an ORDER fromt he Pope that MUST be obeyed??

  • @ninigirl00 Because there are times when reception standing is preferable, although these are rare. To give a blanket order on something like this can cause problems because it can run afoul of a complication in the vast Church. There are MANY different cultures and pressures throughout the world. This is why there are many things which the Church does not order. Sadly, man liberals take a "permitted exception for good reasons" and make it into the rule.

  • Speaking as a new Catholic, while I'm inclined to do whatever is required, at the same time I can already see this isn't going to get much traction. In my church, we have three, one-hour+ sessions and each session is packed with people. To receive communion for each person kneeling might take way too much time than even our priest, who probably would agree with kneeling, is inclined to do. He does however insist that we don't hold out our hands, that we receive communion on the tongue.

  • @MaxxTheMerciless With a communion rail, it is MUCH faster to receive communion kneeling. People do not need to get out of the way for the next person to move in; the priest simply moves from person to person.

  • the kneeling is still the universal norm but many countries have decided to ask for an indult to make standing and receiving in the hand the norm in their country including the US.

  • @treeloop98 They have asked for an indult to PERMIT reception in the hand - not to make it the norm.

  • I attend a thriving traditional parish. My family kneels to receive Holy Communion, as do many others in our parish. No one taps their feet impatiently or is disrespectful, it doesn't take any longer than if we all stood. This is not some symbol of Jesus...This is Jesus, really and truly present among us. It is His Sacred Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. If we have any love for His Sacrifice, we should all kneel knowing we are not worthy to recieve Him.

  • @omegagrandaunt9 That really is an abuse, which should be reported to the bishop, after showing the priest the relevant Vatican documents which state that may not be done.

  • @santaamb43 You are so right about the old mass.

  • I love it when they say it will take too long to distribute communion - do they have somewhere more important to be? Where could be more important than at mass.

  • @mottledbrain What do you mean by a "Tridentine only parish" ? at my Tridentine mass everyone kneels and there is no hand-shaking.

  • @omegagrandaunt9 I have ahd exactly the same thing here, but with the added thing that it was in "the spirit of vatican II"

  • at a recent novena in Ireland we passed the ciiborium around while we all sat The priest took no part in distributing communion nor were there any Ministers of the Eucharist .. no one said "Body of Christ" when I pointed this out to the priest and expressed my upset at what I consider to be an abuse, he told to get off my legalistic high horse!! things are gone from bad to worse in Ireland. we need prayer here please

  • This is a very beneficial practice to Catholics in the Roman Rite. As a Melkite Catholic myself, I do kneel and receive the Body and Blood of Christ when I attend Roman Catholic Masses. However, in our Melkite-Byzantine rite, following Canon 20 of the Council of Nicaea, we are forbidden to kneel. We usually kneel during Lent; but only because kneeling is a sign of repentance.

This however, are rules that apply only to Catholic Churches of the Byzantine Rite.

  • I agree, people need to have more reverence for our Lord in the Holy Eucharist, in my local parish in the uk there is almost no reverence at all and now the priest is planning to take away the alter rails too, When St. John saw his friend, the glorified Christ in the book of Revelation, he fell at his feet as though dead (Rev 1:17). To be honest it's as if our priest is handing out chewing gum, something needs to change!!

  • One of the most beautiful times that I have ever recieved communion, was at a church that had kneelers in the front, that when you went for communion you were able to kneel. I did. It was the most beautiful, most emotional union with my God. Almost more beautiful than my first communion.
