@NCW250 You are welcome. I had an uncle who worked at Ryton on Dunsmore in the 50s and 60s. He said they still had machines then that had been damaged in the Coventry blitz, held together with copper wire and angle iron. It's incredible to think Rootes lasted as long as it did, given these stories. :) And yet their cars were popular for very good reason.
@NCW250 My wife drives a 99' Cadillac Deville Concours. Beautiful car!!! I swear it has an engine and transmission that is a better marriage than any couple I know. V8 Northstar. 300 H.P. Smooth as the day it was made. BUT, Fuel over here is "expected" to hit $5.00 U.S. this summer and she burns premium! Ridiculous. Anyway, those older English sedans ( I know! I know! Saloons over there) are beautiful! And they were spectacular to drive and ride in. My uncle had a 68? Zodiac that I rode in.
@NCW250 LOL! That's funny. It's the same thing over here right now. Union leaders and government equal going extinct car industry. You've got the liberal democrats over here, ( Tory's over there) want us all to drive around in friggin Yugo's and be happy about it. It's disgusting! The Obama white house is standard liberal. Come in all, " We're gonna do this that and the other, and in the end, they destroy the whole country. You/me, we should be able to drive everyday in a car of this caliber.
@NCW250 Another reason was the way that Rootes was managed. After the Imp fiasco, they began touting for investors. Before Chrysler took their fateful share, FIAT were interested and duly despatched an inspection team to check out the factories. They reported back happily that, with the exception of the strike-ridden Linwood plant near Glasgow, Rootes's factories were more like mediaeval blacksmith shops. The Commer plant still used tooling from 1912!
@TheReformed1 Also the powers that be, i.e. GMC and Ford, did not want to build cars here anymore, due to the unions going on strike at Ford at a drop of a hat, and at the end of the day Ford wanted it's German and Spanish plants to build their cars. GMC was more interested in Opel then Vauxhall. British Leyland went bust, attached the Rover name to a Montego, Metro etc, the rest is history.
@TheReformed1 Simply bad management, union leaders and governments equal extinct British car industry. We only have Jaguar, Aston Martin, Land Rover and Morgan left, and a handful of specialist small car makers. The Rootes group went bust due to some stupid union leader at the Humber plant in Acton (London) calling the workers to come out strike, and also the Tory government want the Rootes Group to make the Hillman Imp up in Scotland. Chrysler took them over and destroyed the company… USA
What happened? Why did England stop producing such beautiful cars? These, Zodiacs, Crestas etc. I Know the Humber Snipes and Imperials, were more to the executive customer end of the market, but the zodiacs and crestas, your poor old dad could shell out for and get a very substantial car to cruise the family over to Blackpool for holiday. These cars were all beautiful. What happened over there. I really don't understand. Was it fuel prices etc. etc.?
I have just climaxed!!!

@ThePotstillbill I did not know that, that was not even mentioned in the Rootes book from the 1990's, thank you for letting me know.
