On a quest for some sweeter tasting fruit I try adding some Blackstrap Molasses to the hydroponic reservoir. I did notice a slightly sweeter taste a few weeks later but I think more tests would be needed to compare.

The only downside I've noticed to adding this stuff into my reservoir is that it dropped the PH quite a bit. Not something I would add all the time maybe just now and then.

  • how often should i give a hydro plant molasses?

  • @xthexTxvirusx once it starts putting out flowers and fruit you could just add it with every water change or every 2 weeks.

  • @817ricky82 Molasses is not suppose to be used in hydroponic setups. Theres additives specifically made for hydro that sweetens fruit, etc. Molasses provides food for the beneficial microbes and bacteria which ultimately helps the roots take up more nutrients quicker and more efficiently. If you're not adding beneficial microbes to your water than molasses for the most part isn't doing much.

  • Molasses sucks ass. I tried it and it made my water smell like shit after a week & it turned my roots brown. Also noticed when I changed the water that all the molasses was built up on the bottom of reservoir. just saying.

  • human urine is high in nitrate & makes tomatoes sweeter good luck with that

  • it feeds the beneficial bacteria to produce carbon .it doesn't necessarily make your fruit sweeter. It CAN be helpful1/2-3/4 through your grow. If you use soil once it's enough 1 tablespoon to1gal is all you need. You will not see big gains unless your soil is exhausted in the first place. This is not new ..goes back over 50 years.my grandmother used to do this 1x a year to her potted plants every spring..

  • @xthexTxvirusx

Mix molasses into your res the last two weeks of flowering

  • was it a problem that the ph changed so much? did you adjust it at all and with what? thanks!

  • Did you know that happy plants excrete 30% or more of all the sugars(energy) they create from photosynthsis, through thier roots to feed the microbes in the soil!

Many are now saying that it is not the sugar in molasass that benifits the plants, but the minerals you mentioned. The sugars may actually disrupt the symbiotic realationship between plants and microbes

And your looking for "unsulfured" blackstrap as it may lower your ph a little less.

By the way, I am a hydro hater!

  • Blackstrap is super. It is a great calcium supplement and has tons of trace minerals.
