While Cameron Cohen, an 11-year-old boy, was stuck at home with a hip-to-toe brace, unable to play ball and run around like boys his age, Cameron decided to spend his time learning computer programming and mastered the language of iPhone applications. Cameron used his new-found skills to design iSketch, an iPhone drawing software application that was later approved by Apple for online purchase.

Last March, Cameron spent 10 days at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital (SMUCLA) after undergoing surgery for a benign bone tumor. I had great care in the hospital, Cameron says, but realized that other kids in the hospital need things to help make them feel better, too. With that in mind and a generous heart, Cameron decided to donate a portion of his iSketch earnings to SMUCLA to help purchase electronic and entertainment items for other pre-teens and teens to enjoy during their hospitalization.

I know Cameron was so pleased with care from his orthopaedic surgeon, Jeffrey Eckardt, M.D., and I was glad he decided to help other kids, says his mother Lisa, who volunteers with Mattel Childrens Hospital UCLAs Todays and Tomorrows Children Fund, which helps support research by faculty in the Department of Pediatrics.
