its probally becuse the carrier in those older style dana 44 and dana 30's only go up to 4.1 to go to 4.88 you would need a new carrier

i agree sick jeep i have a 68 cj 5 with a simmular set up buick v6 odd fire and a nice sm 420. The tranny is unbelievable we both made good choices. Nice wheelin' and see ya out on the trails
