From 1973 on, the White Australia policy was for all practical purposes defunct, and in 1975 the Australian government passed the Racial Discrimination Act, which made racially-based selection criteria illegal
So the Question which need to be answered is why did the policy change.

The legal end of the White Australia policy is usually placed in the year 1973, when the Whitlam Labor government implemented a series of amendments preventing the enforcement of racial aspects of the immigration law. These amendments:[12]

Legislated that all migrants, regardless of origin, be eligible to obtain citizenship after three years of permanent residence.
Ratified all international agreements relating to immigration and race.
Issued policy to totally disregard race as a factor in selecting migrants.
The 1975 Racial Discrimination Act made the use of racial criteria for any official purpose illegal.

Yeah! I didn't like Julia Gillard before, but I am liking her realistic outlook. About time somebody was real about the migrant situation.

@HinduIDF thats not entirely true, the students are being attacked by ethnic gangs (generally East Africans or Lebanese) it has nothing to do with who they are rather than what they have on their person, phones, ipods, laptops etc. white-only immigration policy isn't entirely I have ethnic-chinese friends who've lived in Australia for at least 6 generations, I know Indians and Malaysians who've lived here since the 1920's.
