At a recent Satan and Adam show at the World Cafe in Philadelphia (8/13/09), Adam Gussow plays harp and foot-drums on a one-man-band version of Stevie Wonder's hit, "Superstition."

Here's the link to version I learned from: Stevie on "Sesame Street." I speeded it up, of course, because an instrumental without vocals (my version) needs to hold listeners' interest:

  • Wow, awesome stuff, what is it in? A?

  • @Urbanomad22: I'm playing an Ab harp in Eb.

  • Thats the best thing i have EVER heard on a harmonica, love the original song.

    This was so much kick-ass!

does anyone know the riff?? is it playable on a C harmonica?? (i hold myself as recently "graduated" to a mediocre player, though i dont know THAT many songs yet)

  • It's not an original song! I've adapted the various parts (keyboard, guitar, horns), fusing them into one groove-heavy harmonica part. The original is in Eb, so I've used an Ab harp, played second position, but you could certainly move up to a C harp.

Credit where credit is due: this is Stevie Wonder's song. I gather that the Jonas Brothers covered this, too, but I hadn't heard their version when I felt moved to work this harp version up.

  • Great work on a great number. Brilliant!! Btw how do you rate the A flat Harp for general play and its usefulness?

  • Well, I rarely use it. This is the only song that I play on it. I got a good one, this time around (Marine Band's are variable in quality). It's certainly noticeably lower than an A. Didn't Stevie Ray Vaughan tune his guitar down a half step? Might be useful for playing along with his stuff.

  • Cool Adam, do you think you do a lesson some time on Little Walters Quarter to 12? I have tried to but cant get it down.

  • @elkrobber Thanks for the update Adam. Man that song was made for the harp. You got a great groove going there and you worked that riff out real well.

  • @GreyOwlPhotoart I use my Ab harp quite a bit with my band, depends who you jam with i suppose

  • that performance KICKS ASS!!

  • @jbth123 That'd be downgrading man. This man doesn't need that kind of show, he's already got the shit.

  • Could it be possible that my harmonica is too cheap to play the low notes? I can't pull in hole 3, I am using a Suzuki Folkmaster Ab it's also brand new.

  • WOw, You were in my hometown?, In my area where I work and I didnt know it! ?!?!

  • Man, this is incredible! I love Stevie Wonder who is no slouch on harmonica either but this is just bad ass.
