When i was a teenager, i was quite a hermit and never went out of the borders of Singapore. So when my friend had heard this he told me that we should take the railway to neighbouring Malaysia.
We went to a Malaysian state called Kulai and that was the first time i had taken the train or stepped out of my country. It was the most exciting trip till today. We just went there and looked around, had some tea in the coffee shop and visited some Chinese temples there. It was a one day event.
During this period, one of my favourite albums was Tunnel of Love by Bruce Springsteen. I would listen to the album in my walkman during the journey in the train. I later learnt that Tunnel of Love was one of the most personal albums to The Boss in which he was going through a troubled episode in his life. I was too young to know then about married life and love and all the matters that touched in this album then. I still dont. But all the same what i liked most about the album was all of Springsteen's heart in the way he played the acoustic guitar. My particular favourite track was, ....the short guitar intro in Two Faces Have I. I find the lyrics still haunts me till today at the age of 37.
Couple of months back I was watching The Boss on DVD on We Shall Overcome (The Seeger Sessions). You could really witness the amount of work and planning and respect put in to generate and project the authentic folk music soul of Seegers Sessions and i kept watching it over and over again. Only a man like Springsteen could bring it all out back again.
Springsteen's J45 looked like it had so much heritage to tell. I just love the tobacco sunburst colour with all the natural scratches embbeded over the years, and the sound of his guitar just had a really heavy jangle. It just blew me off my mind. Its like he created a story in the songs with the various intensity in his strumming which is what makes him who he is. Springsteen is the Real Deal. I believe that he had always been for the man on the street.
Sometimes i try this but just can never get it right. Thats because i come from different backgrounds and culture and i also lack the experience. I am East Indian and proud to be one. I prefer spicy chilli instead of ketchup on my burger and fries.lol :oP However I feel if an Easterner wants to play such music it has to come with a lifetime of experience and maturity. I feel that music transends beyond nations and culture and creed. I believe that an Easterner can have a personal take on Western music and vice versa. In my opinion I loved the way George Harrison played the Indian sita with respect in his own special way. Even John Lennon would include his Japanese wife in his music although there were many in the world who could not accept this. I guess thats what makes these legends such great story tellers. Its not so much about being born in the right place in the world but rather what comes from within. They can tell a great story with just a few simple strokes of the guitar. Thats what makes an artist who has been around for a long time. They just have this great staying power that lasts for generations. And its really risky business to play a Bruce Springsteen number. Those who know his music will tell you the same. You can't learn that from music scholarships or any music notation or Youtube instructional videos for the matter. Well you can appreciate the covers though. But the point is even Mr Springsteen can't teach it to you. You can't learn it by staying in Huston Texas for just a few years. It has to come naturally from within and you'd probably have to go through something significant in life to express such great songs well enough. Only songs from a chosen few songwriters can be accorded this calibre in my personal opinion and Springsteen is one of them. Others to name a few would be John Lennon, Neil Young, Jackson Browne, Clapton, Knofler, Billy Joel............etc. I would not have known the works of these people if not for my elder brother who showed me the path to music in the way he led his own life when i was still a young boy. His name is Robyn Anthony.
The Boss' Secret Garden is a song which i am not really familiar in a sense that i could not really comprehend the song well enough but felt that my performance was justifiable enough to put it up in my personal channel. I watched a couple of covers of Secret Garden on Youtube after i had recorded my take and they all sound much better than mine. I can learn alot from these covers.
I will be favoriting some video clips posted by others on youtube on my channel to let you decide and reflect for yourselves. These clips that i will be favouriting has a light hearted touch on different cultures particularly the indian culture. I hope you enjoy the videos.:o)
