A while ago, Mike aka Doc Lightning from Home of Poi graced our humble city of Melbourne with his presence. While Henry was filming me having a muck around with his poi (which are awesome), he had a chat with Mike about fire breathing.

Given the dangers of fire-breathing, I figured, it couldn't hurt to spread the awareness a little further. If you want more information of the risks of fire-breathing, check out www.homeofpoi.com, for a wealth of information on all things fire.

However, if you still want to fire breath, hell, be my guest. It does look cool, and so long as you're aware of the consequences but make an informed decision to do it anyway, you can do whatever you like. I'm not your parents, and it's your body, treat it as you will... and it does look fantastic when done well.

Just stay safe,
Nathaniel

  • i couldn't find anywhere on the net answer to my question.

i know that petrol is really cancerogenous, and it's stupid to do f.breathing with it, so i do it on big shows only, maybe once a month.. here, kerosine and pure lamp oil are hard to get.

    but what about medical petrol?

it should be clean, but flammable as well, yes?

    thanks :)

  • @stavrosnegovol Medical petrol? Never heard of it, do you mean medical alcohol? If so, yeah, it's probably better, but I don't really know much about fire-breathing as I don't do it. Don't use petrol though man, that's super dangerous, everclear or some other form of alcohol would be better.

  • Using liquid fuel for fire breathing gives you a larger flame, however if you are worried about your lungs, or your life for that matter, there is another alternative. You can use corn starch as fuel, its safer and it gives you pretty good results. You can check out my video, I used corn starch as fuel. By the way, thanks to NathanielEverist for uploading this video and giving these good advices,

  • Nice man, have you tried using coffee-creaming powder? I like it, because it tastes nice : ). However, your mouth always feels like it's full of glue afterwards, so liquid is easier and has bigger flames, but is more dangerous.

  • Do these words of wisdom apply to using cornstarch as well?

  • Danger of fire etc, yes. Chemical pnuemonia, no.

  • any one who is attempting to do fire breathing and don't want to burn to death use cornstarch or powdered sugar they are both safer to use then alcohol

  • nice poi work..about fire breathing you are right..i am not medically allowed to use fuel but i use corn starch...almost the same effect and relativly safe

  • @NathanielEverist thanks for reply :)

  • @icandoracingme I've used conr starch, there is absolutely no risk with conr starch besides blowback... If you have anymore questions contact me

  • I'm a fire eater and I worry about chemical pneumonia because of the vapour that is in your mouth when you extinguish the flame. Does anyone one know if this carries the same high risk at breathing?

  • thedarkstar980, there not sticks man, what he's using is poi, uh essentially wicks on chain. And it depends on where you live to where you could buy them.

  • heyy how much are those swingy sticks and where can you buy them??
