Doc Wong going thru one of the openings in the Spiegel Grove, a 510' long naval vessel sunk off of Key Largo, Fl creating one of the world's largest artificial reefs for scuba diving. Most of the outside compartments have been opened up for diver access.

Note that these dives were done within NDL (No Decompression Limits) AKA Minimum Deco and are considered Recreational in nature. My equipment configuration is a single tank on my back. The tank you see to the side is another Al 80 slung as a stage bottle, both tanks have 32% Nitrox. I just breathe off the stage and never touch the gas on my back.

Overkill, yea. But I'm just not used to diving with so little equipment and no redundancy. In our incredible diving environment in Monterey, CA, diving in doubles, stage/deco bottles and scooter, it makes warm water diving seem naked!

  • If you're anywhere near the Spiegal dive her - she will change you forever. She will inspire and humble and transform you!

  • Well said, that's what happened to me.

  • I'm sure you will too!

  • Yes, this is such an ideal wreck dive. Exciting, yet still recreational, best of both worlds. That's why I'm spearheading the efforts to create a "Spiegel Grove" in Monterey.

  • Doc, I'm a Monterey diver, too! I love reading your posts on the mailing list :). I did a dive to the Grove, and the person who said it changes you is right. We were going down the decent line and through the water the huge ship slowly appears, it literally made me say "WOW" through my reg. I felt like Dr. Ballard :). It was a very cool wreck, and I loved the wide cut-throughs they had for rec divers to swim through her.

  • If I was doing a tech dive, it would be with doubles and I'd sling the bottles for deco gasses.

  • I mean that. For tecdiving (different gases) is this config not made.

  • You're welcome.

When I dive this configuration (single tank slinging a stage bottle, both with 32% oxygen), I'll only do this on a recreational dive and not a technical dive. I keep to the No Decompression Limits with this setup.

  • well, I use this config sometimes, too. You will have a better access from a boat, but also enought redundanzy for overhead enviorment or solo diving. For open water I prefer a smaller pony-stage (40cuft).

cool video, thank you for uploading!

  • very cool, i soo want to do a wreck dive someday!
