  • i was riveted to this performance...knowing that gould could probably play this faster than any pianist makes you stop and reconsider his choice of tempo. always concerned with the contrapuntal aspect, his playing certainly highlights the details that is often missed in renditions more concerned with the outward aspects of this driving, rhythmic piece. a truly exciting interpretation. it's interesting to note that the final tempo is noticeably faster than the initial pulse. was this intended?

  • Clear, strict, with a glimpse of humour and powerful. Extraordinary with Gould! My favorite Prokofiev's sonata movement.

  • @sdegrace that is totally correct

  • This is the best 3 minute accelerando ever, absolutely gripping.

  • @cctunes1 @utubuser10 i agree. i've played this sonata(at least for myself and among fellow pianists) with vastly different speeds, from very fast to "slow" like gould's. and I am convinced the slower one builds the motivic-monochromatic rythm far more truly. Gould displays that so well, compared to the "fast" ones that usually go by without really having said much - except:" i can play fast and loud" . Gould's SHOWS measure by measure this unrelenting buildup ...

  • Gould might take structural approach. Entering slowly and gradually building up to the finale. But I wonder if his devotion toward commanding the piano on this musical piece sometimes surpasses all his intelligence. The last part is truly awesome.

  • This is a spectacular performance. Check out Richter, too. Both were blazingly fast, I love this movement.

  • man i can't be as bold as prokofiev when i write music...

  • I say it was. Genius. After all, this is WAR! Gould knew it, and felt it, and played it correctly. Damn the fast tempi. This is the stuff.

  • i like this tempo
