Meet Tom: Living with Congenital Heart Disease

Nothing gives Tom Mazzaro greater pleasure than spending time in the backyard, in the barn or at the county fair with his children. But as he approached the age of 30, a congenital heart defect he had lived with since childhood was increasingly taking its toll. Tom was constantly out of breath, exhausted and, at the end of a workday, he struggled just to stay awake. When his symptoms progressed to this point, Tom scheduled an appointment with John Lane, M.D., director of the Adult Congenital Heart Service at Akron Childrens Hospital.
