Here's a small animation I did for show at school.

It demonstrates the ability to layer 3D work with live action film/photographs and have the Daleks interact with the surroundings. All Daleks were scratch built by myself with help from the Project Dalek forum and plans as well as advice from the members.

There is a noticeable jump in the music at the beginning, this is due to me cutting a scene out that featured the Daleks plotting to "exterminate" various people I know, due to privacy however I decided to remove that sequence, other than that though this is the film in its entirety.

All Daleks made in MAYA.

  • Absolutely Brilliant!

Im downloading MAYA Now but i was wondering if u could give me some tips on how to use it and good ideas for wat to do! Thanks!

    GREAT JOB!!!

  • @TheEmperorDalek987 Thanks very much! Have you used any other 3D programs before? If not, I'd suggest at first just going through the basics and building some simpler things before moving onto Daleks - in the video you can see I've been working on mine for years, but once you have a Dalek you're happy with though try making a small test animation and then build up from there. Stuff that always seems popular are Daleks chilling in a room together or invading some place. Hope it helps!

  • Absolutely fantastic work. I've been looking for a way to integrate 3D into live-action shots through Cinema 4D for a long time (and, coincidentally enough, just perfected my Dalek as well - see my channel). If it wouldn't be giving away 'trade secrets' or what have you, how did you integrate the 3D shots into live action shots?

  • @OWADesign Hey, thank you for the nice words. I've just looked at your Dalek, very nice work there. Though MAYA and Cinema 4D are different, the principle of overlying CGI into live action should be the same. I think I'll message you how I did it, because I'm not sure I can fit it within the character limit of this box.

  • @dalekman9999 I'm afraid I'm not familiar with anim8tor, the way I did this was to place a plane with a texture of the background behind the Daleks, line the camera up to make the background fill the screen and make the Daleks appear as though they were sitting on the ground by rotation/moving them and then rendered it out. The principal should be the same in anim8tor. Have a go, maybe try with something simpler first though.

  • @Commandingtripod Thanks bro, Ill defo try some stuff, and hopefully one day, become awesome at making daleks... also i havent used 3d modelling software before so this will b my first time!!!

  • Anything CGI related does seem to suck up a lot of time, once you've mastered the basics of handling objects, I suggest you take a look in my thread on Project Dalek, part way through the first page of it, Monkeytennis has made a great little tutorial on how to get the skirt up and running, which I followed.

Unfortunately I didn't document how I made the rest of the Dalek. I found your thread on Project Dalek to, and left a comment.

  • Yes,

I have been meaning to do that, but I really have yet to find the time, my days have been completely filled recently.

I will get the hang of it eventually though.

I am on Project Dalek as "Audrey2", but I don't go on as often as I should anymore.

  • @pidgeonsandpiearetas sorry, I meant to reply earlier but only just got round to it, if you're really new to MAYA, I suggest you start off with the intro videos, just get the hang of moving and shaping stuff, it's taken me several 'builds' to get my Daleks looking like this. Additionally, when you want to do more complex stuff, just googling tutorials or even searching here can be a great help.

I've seen quite a few of your dalek pieces, they are quite good :)

Also, are you on Project Dalek?

  • That was really nice.

I have been working with Anim8or for ages, perhaps you have seen my dalek work, but I have recently acquired Maya, and I can't make hide nor hair of it, and no longer have access to Anim8or.

Can you help a fellow dalek filmer who doesn't have a clue?
