Good point, but I actually think the web levels the playing field even more when it comes to creating a "learning network".

You don't have to pay extra for access to people with the same interests as you; all you need is a computer and a connection.

This seems to be where things are headed, and it is exciting. I am skeptical however regarding the idea that it is more open and accessible. It is premised on the idea that you network (PLN) provides your education. That means that education more than ever depends on who you know. Schools balance that out to some degree.

This seems to be the direction of where things are headed. But is more open and accessible? The quality of your education depends on your network. There seems to be danger of created a greater chasm in educational opportunities because it all starts with your network.

Well said Anya. In the classic case of an "industry" that is prime for disruption, our existing 1,000 year-old model of education will probably be radically different as a result of lower-cost, more efficient competitors that are able to deliver learning to a new generation. Maybe the traditional institution's role is in coordinating the open resources available for free rather than being simply a rigid house that is resistant to change.

Some points worth thinking BUT if the educated elites continue to stall the economy by the super-concentration of wealth then education is really not needed at all.

    great perspective!

im currently attending a FREE and open source peer lead course (P2PU) and you completely nailed the reasons i am doing it. or at least now i know why.

STANDARDIZED education is slow to respond to the constantly changing world of NON-STANDARD practices. As trends change on a daily bases and "best practices" are constantly formulated higher education courses are left in the dust and i am left without any formal accreditation...

...so here's to us ancient guilds! ;)
