To each his own, but I thought Rachel Ward was perfect, to the point where I even pictured her as I read the book. I have been a fan of hers ever since.
I have been a loyal fan of this miniseries since it first aired in March 1983 and was something my mother loved watching in her final weeks fighting cancer. Richard Chamberlain was perfect for Father Ralph, Sydney Penny was perfect for young Meggie, but I thought Rachel Ward did a wonderful job and being that she is Australian I think she deserved the role. Barbara Stanwyck, Jean Simmons, and Richard Kiley were also excellent. Love the trivia about the kangaroo. Excellent series.
@UCThis1 I totally agree that the younger Meggies were truer to the character! I read this book in the 6th grade...Catholic school, totally forbidden! I think Father Ralph was a good choice with Richard Camberlain!!!
I have lived in California and I live in Queensland now. I do admit to seeing Drogheda as being very Californian and the Kangaroo a bit fake, and the North Queensland canefields didn't quite cut it either! But apart from those things, the series was lovely. I have to agree that the younger Meggies were stronger actresses, but Rachel grew into it as she went on in age. Richard always reminds me of my husband (lucky me!) who is NOT gay! Barbara was awesome! Classic series. Loved it.
IT'S funny he mentions the kangaroo in the opening scene collapsing from exhaustion. I felt that kangaroo looked displaced, and herein I learn the kangaroo had been in captivity and couldn't handle the heat.
While I am in complete agreement with the casting and performance of Barbara Stanwyck I felt Rachel Ward was a light weight. In fact, the younger Meggie actresses carried the characterisation with more depth than Rachel Ward.

That said, I loved the book and the miniseries.
