Dear You Tube Community Member,

I posted this video last year (2007), after I saw footage of You Tube gatherings in California, New York, Europe, etc. The first You Tube gathering I went to was on July 7, 2007, in New York City, months after I posted this video. My feeling is that the ideas in this video are (still) quite relevant, though I might change one or two minor aspects of the general proposal.

This video is less about implementing one person's (imperfect) proposal than it is about starting a fruitful debate in the You Tube community on what a truly great gathering might look like. Thus I encourage you to respond to this video with your own thoughts and ideas on the matter.

No matter what kind of event we do, I think we must somehow honor a fundamental truth about the You Tube community: that everyone in it is a Star. At present, I don't think we've been able to make the gatherings reflective of this notion. This video presents my vision of a You Tube gathering that could get us there. What is your vision?

Enjoy! And please comment...a video response from you would be especially welcome:)

Best,

Juan

  • Hi,

It didn't post the first part. I was with you up till the awards. I feel that's the same as A-list. I think talent can show talent, that people all have something to offer. I think the AusOne gathering will be more like this instead of Toronto and the hype. I was disappointed with the video offering info. I thought it was a tv ad, selling people. Sorry.

  • Thanks for the feedback. A lot of folks complain about the award ceremony part -- a response vid may be in order. The award ceremony being proposed here is one where talent is acknowledged no matter how few subscribers the person has. This is a critical aspect of the plan because it keeps the "A-listers" -- those with the most subscribers -- from dominating the event. As mentioned here, a committee of YT users can be established for the sole purpose of scouting for this kind of talent. thoughts?

  • so 7/7/08 is happening? i hadn't heard much about it.

  • I'm talking about 7.7.07. This video was posted last year. As mentioned in the video description, I'm passing this video around again because I believe the ideas in it are still relevant. I'll try to spread it every time there is a You Tube gathering coming up.

  • how could this be organized? we could possibly show something like this at 888 at the Science Centre...but the content has to be community organized.

  • If you'd like to do something like this on 888, I guess the way to go about it is to post a video asking those who will attend the 888 gathering to submit a short (perhaps 30 secs to a minute) video to be screened as part of a montage on 888. Form a small group of people that will take on the editing, and another group to secure the viewing space. I can't make the 888 event, but I'm happy to help edit the material. Shoot me an email if you're interested.

  • Before asking folks to submit video clips for a montage, you may want to test the idea with them. You can make a video saying that you have viewing space available (only if this is true, of course) and that it'd be great to show You Tube content in it -- a great way to celebrate the You Tube community and so on...Give them a window of time (perhaps 1 to 3 weeks) to vote yes or no on the idea through the comments section. Just one of many ways to do this democratically. Happy to talk more.

  • And just to invite people to be with the other people they watch or even know personally. I'd go to a gathering to meet the people, that's all.

People showing their talent is fine, I just don't care for it getting competitive. I know I may be alone in this view, I'm just stating mine. I can't even get any videos up, but one day I will. The idea is inclusive. Sorry to post twice, just didn't have enough room.

    Best,

    Rachel

  • I love many the tutorial videos. I certainly don't want this to be about popularity. Perhaps we can do away with the requirement of showing one's face on one's channel. The tutorial people can then come up with their own 30 second sequence of images for the montage.

I know that many people -- including myself -- wouldn't sit through 2+ hours of You Tube entertainment. But they might sit through it if they expect to see something they made on the big screen -- that's the whole idea.

  • I know there are many versions of the montage idea already on Satellite TV, but what I propose is radically different because:

    1. My montages aim to be as inclusive as possible.

    2. My idea involves having You Tubers meet to watch themselves at a real movie house -- not on satellite TV. This is to help show, in dramatic fashion, that You Tube has made everyone a star. As I say in the proposal:

uploading a video onto You Tube is a lot like being screened at the movies for a day.
