The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by resolution 36/67 of the United Nations General Assembly. In 2001, through the adoption of resolution 55/282, the General Assembly established 21 September as the Day in which to commemorate peace on an annual basis.

With the theme of "Peace and Democracy: Make Your Voice Heard", the 30th anniversary of the International Day of Peace is being celebrated at UN Headquarters on 15 September.
