"Lets Put Out The Lights And Go To Sleep"
Jack Payne & His Band. 1932.

This was Recorded in November 1932 with vocal chorus by Billy Scott-Coomber. Again, this Jack Payne version has to be one of my favourite, due to the great sound of the band although in equal measure I do enjoy the Ambrose version with vocals by Sam Browne and Elsie Carlisle and the lovely version by Lew Stone and the Monseigneur Band with a sleepy sounding Al Bowlly, complete with yawning!, and Mary Charles.
I must now put out my lights and go to sleep!!!.

  • I don't know if anyone remembers, or noticed it for that matter, but in the movie "What's Up Doc?" this is the song playing in the background when Ryan Oneil is riding the elevator up to the top floor of the hotel.

  • Rudy Vallee's (the composer) original recording of this is my favourite it is so much sweeter! - one interesting thing. Vallee's title was 'Let's put out the lights and go to bed' which ends the line better - but British Bands had to sing 'Sleep' because 'Bed' wasa thought too raunchy!

  • Love it, even better than the Crosby version! Just charming, thanks so much.

  • This is real music!!

    Beautiful version!!

My favorite is the one by Paul Whiteman ft. Ramona from August 1932

aww how I love this song!

  • One of my favourite Paynes and i had not heard it for ages. His band often had the best version of a song to my mind and im sure you agree!

  • Excellent early-30's bounce, indeed!

  • The same happens to me!
