@1001orpheus "good" is always taste. but hollywood is made for mainstream profit. some diamonds can also be found there, but mostly you will have your typical, shallow, not too challenging, always-in-the-same-scheme movie. you don't need to sort films according to their director, just have a look left and right from the popcorn path and you will find good stuff. cannes festival always has some decent european inspiration, and most moviedatabases prove good taste.

@1001orpheus As far as contemporary, hard to say, but films by Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino, Nicholas Winding Refn (his films aren't great but show promise). Foreign films are usually where the excitement is at, I highly recommend Stephen Chow and Chan Wook Park's films (you MUST to see Oldboy).
