Women and girls in Nigeria have less access to education, remain politically and economically disadvantaged compared to men, and endure significant levels of physical and sexual abuse. The HIV/AIDS incidence in Nigeria is gender biased, as females are more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior for monetary gain, have limited access to STI and HIV/AIDS information, and are less likely than males to seek testing and treatment.
The Women's Initiative for Sex Education and Economic Empowerment (WISE) project, supported by the Japn Social Development Fund (JSDF) worked to reduce HIV/AIDS prevalence among young women and cultivate healthy living through increased education, economic empowerment initiatives, and access to healthcare through provision of counseling, testing, and treatment of HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).
The Project Video is followed by a brief interview with Dr Chinwe Effiong (Discovery Channel) and Feyeshike Adeyeke (AFRICARE Nigeria) about the WISE project. This was broadcast during JSDF Day on January 19 2011.
