LA girls adopt Makola Primary School in Msamba, Africa

January 9,2009 - The Makoka Primary School in village of Msamba, district of Nsanje, country of Malawi, Africa has served many children since its inception in 1935. Currently the school has an enrollment of 190 girls and 259 boys.

In order to provide fresh water for the school for the next decade, Marisa Rothman, Nahal Shakib, and Krystyna Sikora of Los Angeles CA worked for over two years to raise money for to support the effort of supplying sufficient fresh water school children in Malawi, Africa.

Marisa Rothman began the effort of raising funds when she was 12 years old by pledging the proceeds of her Bat Mitzvah. Nahal Shakib and Krystyna Sikora, Marisa's schoolmates at the time, joined her and they together raised the remaining money to adopt this school by collecting funds at various charity events to help Water Wells For Africa (www.waterwellsforafrica.org) and Water For All (www.waterforall.org) to provide a fresh water well at the school.

The depth of the well supplying the school is sufficient to provide sustainable fresh water via a merry-go-round pump that supplies water to a large holding tank. Children play on the merry-go-round during the day to fill up the holding tank. Pipes from the holding tank connect to a faucet that is used to provide a continuous supply of water.

It is such a pleasure to see these young ladies focusing on needs of people in a country that has serious water supply problems. They serve as an inspiration to all that hear about their efforts. -- Water Wells For Africa
