The purpose of doing this jaw exercise is to bring the jaw muscles in alignment with each other. Usually one side of your jaw is tighter and stronger in proportion to the other side. By forcing your mouth to open evenly and partially, you begin to strengthen the weak side. This is usually done after you have seen your dentist or chiropractor.
