When someone wants to make a Linux distribution, such as the Ubuntu Linux distribution (a free Linux distro), available to other people, anywhere in the world, they create an ISO file for each CD / DVD that the distro requires - and then they make the ISO file available for download . . . at one or more web sites on the internet

So, when someone needs to make an ISO for downloading, they put all the files that go on the CD / DVD into a single ISO file, and give the ISO file a name and the file name usually ends in .ISO (dot ISO)

All the files that someone needs to put on a CD / DVD are put into a single ISO file, referred to as an ISO image file. It's a single file that contains an image of what will be burned onto a CD / DVD. The ISO image file usually contains hundreds of files.

ISO image files are then put on servers on the Internet so that they can be downloaded by anyone.

There are over 130 different Linux distributions and when you're installing Linux, most of these Linux versions require more than one CD / DVD. Virtually all Linux distributions are available for download as a Linux ISO image files.

When you download a Linux ISO file and burn it onto a CD / DVD, this creates a Linux operating system CD / DVD. And this could be a Linux installation version CD / DVD or a Linux live version CD / DVD

Linux Tips: A Linux ISO file can be a "live" CD / DVD, "installation" CD / DVD (or both!). If you have high-speed Internet access, you can download Linux ISO files to easily run Linux - for general Linux training or for Ubuntu Linux Training. For the Ubuntu Linux ISO, it is both a "live" and an "installation" CD / DVD.
