Theatrically released in Japan, October 2001, "Onmyoji" played in over 2500 screens and grossed more than 3.1 billion Yen (approximately $23.6 million dollars). "Onmyoji" immediately hit number-one at the box office and was one of the blockbuster films of that year released from Toho Co., Ltd., the premier entertainment corporation in Japan. Only another Toho release, Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" (which recently won an Academy Award for "Best Animated Film") out-performed "Onmyoji" at the box office as the top Japanese film of 2001.

This has to be one of the most visually beautiful films I've seen in over 40 years of watching all kinds of films, foreign & domestic. The gentleman who plays the 'Onmyoji' or "Yin/Yang Master" Mansai Nomura is brilliant! He has the grace of a highly skilled Kabuki/Noh actor, which is what he is; most of his work is on stage where all parts are played by men, like they've been for hundreds of years. Mr. Nomura is perfection in this film, because of his lengthy stage work. I'd love to more of him

A friend recommended this great film to me. The story unfolds quietly, taking time to explore the magical folk-tale setting and the characters. It really involves you on an emotional level. But it gears up to quite a third act, when all hell breaks loose. Hiroyuki Sanada as Doson is a lot of fun to watch!

The film explores the power of love, for both destruction and redemption. Best of all, it's really enjoyable!
