Unfortunately, the rich, in the way of the Republican Party, have played a lot of our best middle class people like a stradivarious - gotten us to distrust the government so we would be fooled into voting to protect them and their wealth and power. Liberals as a group have never striven for wealth and power - it's not why they serve in government. They serve in government to act as the balance to keep things from shifting too far to the wealthy class.

Our middle class is what made this country great - not the rich - which Jefferson called the "fake aristocracy". He said the true aristocracy was the intelligent an virtuous minds that should lead our country.

Ironically, we're at a time in history when taxes on the wealthiest are at historic lows (now around 35%, at one time they were as high as over 90% of income and they remained rich!). When we dipped the top bracket to 25%, we got the great depression. That's because the rich stopped lending to and investing in the middle class and the middle class collapsed.
