  • @theduchess39 I think you're so right...about EVERYTHING. If this story has any truth to it Ike and Tina were probably "killin' em with "Land of 1,000 Dances" back then. They performed that song often. Maybe...MAYBE even "Shake a Tail Feather". Both of those are very high energy songs that they liked to do onstage.

  • Funny story, but did Dave refer to Tina as a "b - i - t - c - h?" Wow. That should have been edited in the retelling of the story. Amazing no one even thought twice after Sam said it.

  • @Crillin112 - Your Totally Right! I Am A Tina Fan & I Know That She Performed The Song On Stage Before It Was Actually Recorded & Released So I Think His Story Is True :-)

  • In those times you would not actually legally records songs until much later....sometimes it was backwards... they went on tour first, then recorded second, because they were local bands on the road, before they were recording anything. so its possible that she was on the road with that song for years until she was actually given a deal to record it with an agency.

  • Thanks for clearing that up. Ike & Tina recorded "Proud Mary" in 1971, but I figured they had been singing that song LIVE for awhile. Sam's story is total BS but that's nothing new for him. Fact is there is no possible way for Ike & Tina (or anyone else) to be singing "Proud Mary" before 1969 because the song didn't exist until January of 1969. The movie "What's Love..." incorrectly had Ike & Tina singing that song in 1968 too, but that's not surprising considering how much BS was in that movie.

  • Ike and Tina first performed it in 1969, but yea,,, either way it's still impossible for MLK to have been there

  • "...In 1971, a cover version was released by Ike & Tina that differed greatly from the structure of the original, but is also well known and has become one of Tinas most recognizable signature songs. The Turners version was substantially rearranged by Soko Richardson and Ike Turner. It included a sultry, slow opening and spoken-word intro by Tina Turner, and it reached #4 on the pop charts in 1971 and won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Group in 1972."

  • From the "Proud Mary" wikipedia page:

"'Proud Mary' is a song written by American singer and guitarist John Fogerty. It was first recorded by rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival (in which Fogerty played lead guitar and sang lead vocals) on the 1969 album Bayou Country. Released as a single in January 1969, it became the bands first top-ten hit on the U.S. Pop chart..."

  • Well excuse me LOL! But everything I've ever read says that Creedence Clearwater Revival's original version of "Proud Mary" was FIRST released as a single in January of 1969 from their second album titled "Bayou Country" (also released in January of 1969).
