Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has held his first-ever online chat with web users around the world. The discussion was hosted jointly by the websites of the central government and Xinhua. One hour before the live web chat, more than 38 thousand questions had been posted on the online forum, covering anything from employment to health care and everything in between.
During the online chat, the Chinese Premier said the global financial crisis has yet to bottom out and that its impact is still spreading. He said the greatest influence of the crisis on China is on the country's real economy instead of purely the financial sector, which, after more than 10 years of reform, is relatively stable and capable of withstanding the crisis.
Wen Jiabao said China has announced a raft of stimulus plans to cushion the blow of the crisis. He also noted that China's economic stimulus plans have started to take effect and have produced good results in certain areas.
The Premier said he has confidence in China's capital markets, noting the government has the responsibility to establish an open, fair and transparent market environment. He said private capital and privately-owned businesses should be boosted to cope with the ongoing financial crisis.
In response to a question about the income gap, Wen Jiabao said narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor could not be accomplished on its own and should be tackled alongside economic development.
Wen Jiabao also expressed his concern for the country's jobless migrant workers and other unemployed people and encouraged them to start their own businesses. The Premier said he was deeply concerned about the employment issue, including those of migrant workers, college graduates and jobless urban families.
In response to a question on the treatment of seriously ill children, Wen Jiabao admitted that for sick children to recover, having a good medical system was more important than having a good Premier. He said China will strive to improve the country's health care system to make health care more accessible and affordable.
The Premier also noted that relations between the mainland and Taiwan have entered a new stage of peaceful development.
Meanwhile, Wen Jiabao said that any regression in the relationship between China and the United States would not be in keeping with the tide of history.
Wen said, "I am 67 years old. I really want to bring confidence and hope to the Chinese people by my words, my behavior, and by the policies of the government. I am here sincerely. I am not sure whether the online population will be satisfied with my answers. But all the answers are truthful. I hope all the promises that I have made can come true."
After the interview, the Premier also visited staff at the Xinhua news agency.
