An excellent collection of photos. Sukhothai is one of my favorite places to visit, not only because of its history, but because we have family there as well. My wife was born there.

Sukhothai was the first capital of Thailand but why doesn't it very famous? I think most tourist don't know Sukhothai. Even I'm from Sukhothai, I've never known that Sukhothai was the first capital!

Actually the oldest city in the Thai/Tai history is actually Chiang Saen which was built 545AD. Im still quite baffled as to why sukhothai was given the title as first Thai city when Lanna was as much a great part of Thai culture as Sukhothai. But then again records of Chiang Saen wasn't discovered till not too long ago. Yonok Nakorn Chaiburi Sri Chiang Saen <--- first Tai kingdom in SEA

Sukhothai was the capital of the small kingdom of Sukhothai, it was never the capital of Thailand. At the time of Sukhothai there were also such kingdoms of Angkor, Lanna, Pattani, and Mon Dvaravarti in the region. Thailand was far from becoming a bordered nation or even a place that would have been considered 'Thai'. Sukhothai is not even a predecessor to Ayutthaya, as Ayutthaya was founded by the Mon Prince U-Tong who came from a kingdom in what is now Suphanburi and was a rival of Sukhothai

i thought that ayutthaya was the oldest but ayutthaya is after Sukothai bangkok is youngest
you can get more infomation from Wikipedia, the infomation i got was from my travel books, lonely planet etc. It was wonderful place to visit, Also it was the birthplace to the Thai alpabet, also the bell in the picture ment if any people had a problem, they could ring the bell and the King would see them to resolve the problem.. I may return in november for loy krathong festival.

Yes, it sure is..The Kingdom existed from 1238 till 1438. The old capital, now 12 km outside of New Sukhothai in Tambon Mueang Kao. If you go its worth staying a couple of days..get a moped and arrive at 7am before all the other people..you get a map at the entrance, lots to see and full of history.
