Following a typical day in the life of a BBC newsreader (Michael Buerk). It seems like a slow news day but then the Chancellor of the Exchequer resigns. Look out for the reaction to the minister chosen to replace him.

Also look out for Michael quacking!

Clips shown in the programme 'Open Air' from 1989 - repackaged and shown in 'Short Cuts' made by BBC Education in 1996 - and repeated here within the BBC Learning Zone on BBC2 in 1999.

  • observant viewers will notice Mark Thompson ....Mark Byford ....Mark Dammazer....Adrian Van Klaveran et al who are a little clique who now "run the bbc"....with total incompetence ....Byford as usual dissapears in case there's a Fu** up .....

  • I always enjoy a nice slice of hyperbole!

  • At 1:22, the director says, "Zoom five, and make charisma." 'Make charisma'? Is that some sort of code? If so, for what?

  • I think the line is 'zoom 5, animate charisma'. A name to describe the animation process?

  • Classic Eighties news room! Striped shirts, white collars, braces, ties loosened! It's pure theatre. Love it!

  • Back in the day when the BBC could command some respect from the licence-fee payer..

  • @pendoian I don't unforunately it would be very interesting and amazing and brilliant to see a BBC tape The Making of the 6 and see how the journalists and people who are in charge of the bbc six 0 clock news get ready for the main bbc six 0 clock news bulletin at 6.00pm and how they prepare the main top news stories to use on that programme at 6.00pm its very interesting to see what they do behind the scenes and behind the television cameras of bbc news it is great starting of at 0:00 amazing

  • Thats very very interesting I like seeing what happens behind the scenes of the bbc news what they do to prepare for the main television news when they go on air how they get ready for the news and how they prepare stories how they have a meeting to discuss the top story for the one 0 clock news six 0 clock news and nine 0 clock news it is very intersting I like that bit starting of at 0:00 it is great to see that thank you for uploading such an excellent video aoout how to prepare for the news

  • @Visonu When he said: "the former Leader House and Chief Secretary", he meant Biffen was the former Leader Of The House and a former Chief Secretary, rather than being the current Chief Secretary who had previously been Leader.

  • This was on my birthday :)

  • @misterspiffy Questech Charisma was a DVE, a Digital Video Effects device that animated images in real time.

  • @michaelsouthwest This is indeed correct.

  • I think if the Cameras weren't on them they would not be so 'charged' as this.

It's like when I used to work on IT and one of the servers went down and the whole office used to look at us. My superior was like: "QUICK! RUN AROUND TO VARIOUS CABLE ROOMS AND LOOK LIKE WE'RE FIXING IT!"

  • ABORTION IS READY!

  • ...i'm glad ....dosen't look like you get it very often !!!
