These are descriptions for AM Sync on some different manuals of different portable radios. I think Sony doesn't have to pull punches.
[Sony ICF-2010 (2001D)]
Sync: If reception is difficult because of beats from adjacent stations or distortion due to fading, which frequently occurs during AM reception, set to this mode and proceed as in "Tuning using synchronous detection".
[Tecsun PL-660]
When receiving AM broadcasting, if there is interference from adjacent strong
signals, you can activate the SYNC function to improve the reception.
Notes:
1. The standard model of receiving AM station is the best normally. If there is
distortion, or interfering within the AM station, please try to adjacent station
signals by activating the Synchronous detection function, it can improve the
reception.
2. If the "SYNC" symbol keeps flashing, it indicates that the radio signal is too weak or the frequency is deviant. It is recommended to exit the synchronization detection function as it is not able to function properly.
[Grundig G3]
The synchronous detector can be used when listening to AM (medium wave) and shortwave broadcast stations. It may help to minimize interference and to improve the signal quality. While listening to a station press the SYNC button. SYNC appears in the display as does USB or LSB to the right. You can sync on the Upper or Lower sideband by pressing the U/LSB button and noting which selection gives the clearer reception or improves the audio. Turn the synchronous detector off while tuning stations or when it's not needed. Using the WIDE/NARROW button may also help. Using the synchronous detector does not always minimize interference or improve the signal. To turn the synchronous detector off, press the SYNC button.
This is a selectivity switch on the right side of the radio, under the TUNE knob. Use WIDE when there is no adjacent frequency interference for the best audio fidelity. Use NAR. To reduce adjacent frequency interference, but minimizing interference or improve the signal. To turn the synchronous detector off, press the SYNC button.
[Grundig Satellit 800] all the same as Drake SW-8
For general tuning and listening, normal AM is best. If, however, the received signal sounds distorted, or interference from adjacent stations is present, AM
synchronous should be engaged. The synchronous detector in your receiver can greatly reduce the severe audio distortion that can occur due to signal fading. The detector also permits selectable tuning to either the upper or lower sideband portion of an AM signal. Since most all AM (LW, MW and SW) broadcasting generally uses double-sideband transmission, detection of either of the two sidebands results in full reception of the transmitted information. The selectable sideband tuning and detection not only aids reception by permitting tuning to the stronger or less distorted sideband, but also permits rejection of the sideband nearer to the interfering signal(s).
Wonderfull tech. video again from pem.thanks my dear friend..

Fantastic demonstration of the sync from this good old sony 2010.I have two of this fantastic radios and will never miss them.
Best DX from germany!!!!

@Shortwave68 I hope ICF-2011 will be on market :D. The technology of Sony isn't out of date, I think. Thank you for your comment ! Have a nice DX from Japan.

こんにちは、私も深夜ですが受信を試みましたが同周波数のインドを受信しているようです。以前からUSBモードで何度も試しているのですが未だ成功していません。凄いです。
