Thirty years after the founding of the Islamic republic, the ideals that inspired the uprising continue to inform every day life in modern Iran.

So how has the revolution managed to sustain itself through war, international isolation, economic sanctions, and regional turbulence?

And how has Iranian society changed since the seismic upheaval of 1979?

  • The fellow reports "12 year olds were pulled out of school and sent to the war fronts". That is totally false. There could be 15, 16 year olds who went to the fronts, but it was most definitely all voluntary. The nation was awash with volunteers for the defence of the fatherland. No one had to be forced.

  • The blue print of the islamic republic is to always be involved in k'aos & national emergency, either foreign or domestic. In the name of national emergency they have eliminated oposition in a fierce & systematic way. That's how they have maintained power & survived. They are alwasy involved in some kind of hostage taking, war, or crises.

  • Iran was demonized from day 1 since the hostage taking. It also breathed life into a dying Militant/Patriot machine in the US that was suffering b/c of Vietnam. So, nobody in the neighborhood really wanted to be assoc. w/Irans actions. While Saddam sought to use it to empower himself. And the Arabs fed him to be a loyal guard dog. One has to ask the question: What would have become of the Iranian revolution minus the hostage crisis. Did it serve the country as a whole? Or awaken a nemesis?
