This is a quick demonstration of how to straighten and crop a wonky photo in GIMP. This is what I'm doing:

- Open photo in GIMP
- Drag a guide line down from the top ruler, about level with the horizon
- Select the Rotate tool (two blue rectangles)
- Gently drag the photo to rotate it until the horizon is level with the guide line
- Click Rotate to apply the rotation permanently
- Choose the Crop tool (the scalpel)
- Drag the crop box so it covers the whole picture
- Now start to drag one of the corners, and after you start, hold Ctrl and Shift
- The crop box will now keep its proportions, so just move the crop box in a bit so you exclude the grey areas near the borders
- When you're ready, let go of the crop box and press Enter to apply the crop
- You're finished! Choose File, Save As and choose a different name so you don't overwrite the original.
