From graining a stone to pulling a print - this film pretty much shows all the steps of making a lithograph from stone.

  • Thanks Punkaneeter - keep on rockin' & rollin'

  • Only people who know the process would understand what is going on.

  • Fair point well made. Although I refer you to the response to konzwambii's post - "The idea of the film was to show artists/clients the steps involved, without getting bogged down in specifics etc." When I show the film I will usually explain certain parts.

  • I know a little about other printing processes, but not this one. However I would say that this clearly illustrates the difficulty and arduous work involved. I had no idea it is so involved. I guess my personality would be too impatient for this process.

How much of the result is completely predictable, and is there an element of "happy mistakes"? Or is it more like you don't really know what you will get?

  • The majority of the process can be completely predictable, it would be totally frustrating for artists if the results were unpredictable. Tried and tested materials plus lots of experience helps. Throwing new materials in the mix is when things become uncertain and you pray for a "happy" accident - for example in the film one of the washes we used was made with Vodka - it worked to some extent, but will require further testing.

  • Glad you brought that point up Konzwambii - it would be hard to show all the difficulties of the process. The idea of the film was to show arists/clients the steps involved, without getting bogged down in specifics etc. The "test" image was worthwhile, in that it did facilitate the film making process and lessons were learnt from the washes.

  • A 'few' years on, just want to mention the wear and tear on the body from this art form. I have severe arthritis in my lower back and neck, dermatitis, and respiratory problems. I did use gloves , respirator, and ventilation consistently. The sponging water alone seemed to wear down my hands. Can no longer work and I'm not that old. Just something to consider before you fall in love with the medium, as I did.

  • I'm a litho student at ASU and I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS VIDEO!!! It's so difficult to explain litho to people who don't even know what printmaking is..

  • Really this is a pretty good demo of the steps in doing a stone litho. My only objections are that it doesn't convey how difficult it is to properly etch a stone, and that it produces only a "test" image and not a worthwhile work of art.
