  • "Is this real life or is this not real life? What is real life, what isn't real life?" (You know if you substitute "reality" in the place of "real life" this is like watching The Matrix.)

  • ...but the FX aren't as good!

    Thanks.

  • What a great video. I really enjoyed listening to your analysis. Maybe I should hire you as my therapist. You can be the first online mental health doctor. You're hire! :)

  • Thanks, Gina. I no longer practicing psychotherapy today, rather, doing organizational work. But, if I were, I can tell you'd be a fun client!

  • There is definitely a different side of me when I come to YouTube. I give my time to many people I ordinarily would not give my time to. I try to seek out those that I would not cross paths with in my day to day life in addition to those that I would feel a natural kinship with.

  • I think you've hit on one of the keys to YT: giving us all access and insights into people we would otherwise never come to know.

  • Adding to the previous comment: I think that anonymity, at least of a sort, is part of what makes it easy for folks to present different aspects of themselves. One can say to oneself (one's self), "well, nobody in my real life will know about that".

  • Thanks Tom. As usual, I enjoyed your thinking. It's funny (I think): as I was reading some of the comments, I found myself thinking, "hmmm, that sounds like a pretty good description of Los Angeles". LA is the first place I've lived where you can generally assume that you will run into somebody by chance only once. In a sense, this leads to even more anonymity than youtube.

  • The many voices within, yes! How we look and sound is part of the shock of growing on YT, and it really helps that we can now see each other's face. Reading the small cues on screen allows one to do a bit of "reality checking" that just text alone doesn't provide. I really like your analysis of things, very informative and always thought provoking.

  • That description also captures my approach, Steve. I find it more interesting to present myself in as full a manner as I can rather than tightly managing an "image."

  • that was very interesting. I think the YT "reality" question it is one many of us have pondered. I was toying with a vlog about it myself. I guess YT is a new extension of "being a human being" and we are still learning what it means and how it affects us
