Corruption. 2008 has been a very dishonest year for Langford city council, and more specifically Mayor Stew Young.

The new highway interchange at Spencer Rd & Hwy 1 is intended to ease traffic flow for the new Bear Mountain Resort/golf course.

However, the city is going ahead with borrowing $25 million from local developers without holding any local referendum as to what the taxpayers would like to see happen.

Some of the Issues:
ENVIRONMENTAL
Langford Lake Cave system is threatened by planned blasting

The interchange will destroy part of the marshy land at the end of Florence Lake, which is home to countless waterbirds, otters, and other creatures

The interchange requires the destruction of Garry Oak trees and ecosystem

LEGAL
Stew Young and his "partners in crime" are circumventing the normal municipal process despite the thousands of legal signatures on petitions collected over the last few weeks, protesting the lack of process

Council randomly changed to # of the Spencer Rd Interchange Bylaw from 1147 to 1152 after the petition went out, leading many to suspect it was done deliberately to invalidate the petition (which specifically refers to Bylaw 1147).

Council created a "Local Service Area" around the unpopulated marsh in question and is claiming that they don't have to ask residents' permission to go ahead as no one lives in this Local Service Area. (Too bad the otters can't talk).

HUMAN RIGHTS
Stew Young is threatening to sue the tree-sitters (who tried to protect the work from beginning without democratic process) for the cost of 70 police HE preemptively called in since he KNEW there would be problems

Langford Council insists that they are not trying to intimidate people out of exercising their legal right to protest.

Finally, the borrowing bylaw is before the province's Inspector of Municipalities and those of you who would be inclined to do so have the opportunity to call or email the inspector directly to give him your thoughts on the matter and I would encourage you to do so.

B.C.'s Inspector of Municipalities is Gary Paget and can be called at 356-6575. Gary.Paget@gov.bc.ca

  • Has anyone seen the overpass, yet? It's looking great! Good progress so far.

  • Yeah! Boy oh boy...it's just great. And always so fresh looking with spanking new paint to cover the latest graffitti that supposedly a "thing of the past" in Dogpatch.

  • hey "druidg" you fuckin hippy no one gives a shit about frogs we disect them in science so who cares im 14 and i know when i grow up im going to have a job like stew gordon and live a little instead of being nothing but a thorn in the side this is 2008 not 1970 so come out from under that rock and open your eyes STUFF CHANGES, CHANGE WITH IT OR SUCK IT UP

  • Poor little kid. One day when they're gone you'll understand how important small-seeming species are. Keep on doing your research.

  • I also dont know why they give such a damn about the stupid frogs. Thousands get killed on florence lake road every spring and they arnt trying to get that road shut down you know why because half of them live on it

  • MattyJulien, you are referring to an invasive species of bullfrog that get killed annually. The species in question are an ecologically significant red-legged frog. Please do some research before diseducating those around you. It is so frustrating.

  • @Sphinkt3R Yeeeeeeeaaaah!!!!!!!

  • go back to saanich ah hahahaha lol

  • These guys just look so stupid. Watching this video they look unbelievably stupid. Schoolyard bullies.

I would encourage everyone who ever goes to these things, eachone to have their own camera. When you see through the camera lens, you have a different perspective, you don't see the camera man here getting in the pointless scuffles with the bullies. Simply documenting, making the case.

  • Yea, the excuse of feeding one's children for today at the cost of ecological damage is so flawed, because then in the future, if things are so damaged, how are your kids supposed to feed their kids?

The men here are basically cheating their grandchildren from a higher quality of life by supporting habitat destruction.

  • Won't your family suffer when the business goes under so it doesn't have to cough up any of the money they duped Stew Young into believing they would give him. Why such loyalty to these cutthroat developer business men? Trust me Construction Workers Out There: your all-knowing bosses will NOT be similarly and faithfully there for YOU when times are tough. As long as you C.Workers and such realise that.

  • I have kids, I support my family, I understand the need to provide. But these construction jobs that are involved in shady backdoor dealings, no permits, no process, and all for houses and golf course that no one in the middle class can afford, and I ask myself...why are you defending these employers?

  • 101101101777, I agree so much with your comments it makes my face hurt. These people who are so passionately Devoted to non-sustainable jobs. While protesting (and today still) I noticed these construction workers wailing about their families and their jobs. Clearcutters and those who fish our seas empty sing a similar tune.
