This young kid does a swell job on producing an accurate video. However using Japanese Water Stones , and being a knife maker. I use microscopes and loops in my videos to check edges. I can honestly tell you if you have a microscope or loop to SHARPEN AWAY FROM EDGE. In this case he is sharpening into the edge. Which makes fast work on the blade, but if you wish to acheive a finer edge sharpen AWAY from the edge and not into it. Which de-groves the blades edge!

Oil for certain stones is absolutely necessary in regards to abrassive grit reduction.
For example. An Arkansas sharpening stone in rought grit would just soak up oil, and also not do enough work, BUT the same Arkansas stone in "FINE" grit to give a polished edge will produce a FINER edge ABOVE the grit the stone is rated at with the use of oil which fills in the cavitys of stone grit pits. End result is a finer edge! It's said anything above 6000grit is useless!

Google My name. Watch my youtube Videos, and then google Neo Tribal Metal Smiths Association.
Then youll see who is the fool, full of BS. Im not out to insult people, but before you just open your mouth and say something foolish investigate first and understand the appropriate measure to take with your comment. Not to mention I am a known smith in the Knife making network. So alas please "GOOGLE", and I forgive your sharp tounged words, if you have questions just ask.

what no edge test to show us how sharp it is ?? :-)
what is the use of a honing rod?
Darkofdeath5 1 year ago
@Darkofdeath5 It adds a micro bevel and removes any burrs that could be left on the edge and also gives the edge "bite"!

@86thmountmerrion It only adds a micro-bevel if you sharpen at a steeper angle than you did on the stone, which you shouldn't do. And a micro-bevel is not desirable when you have a secondary bevel maybe on a scandi ground blade.

@75SilentWarrior When using a ceramic rod by heightening the angle you will not add much of a micro bevel because the fine ceramic doesn't cut very fast, if you were to leave the bevel flat you would have to remove far more metal which would be slow with a ceramic rod and also the slightly steeper ceramic honed bevel will add more bite.
