Slater Posts Perfect Ten to Top Off Amazing Day of Action at Boost Mobile Pro
SAN CLEMENTE, California (Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008) The standard of surfing at the Boost Mobile Pro pres. by Hurley was nothing short of electrifying today, but per usual, it was eight-time ASP World Champion and ratings leader Kelly Slater (USA) who stole the show.

With a 9.17 and 9.60 in his Round 4 scoreline, Slater had opponent Kieren Perrow (AUS) needing a combination of scores to beat him with half the heat to go. Still, with 20 seconds remaining, Slater pulled out all the stops and stamped his authority on the heat by posting the first and only perfect 10 of the event thus far.

I'm not sure it was a 10 it was a good ride though, Slater said with a smile. There was some bump on it, but I was able to get just steep enough in the pocket to get a vertical bang on it and I got that reverse at the end and stuck it.

Slater surfed twice today, beating wildcard and former ASP World Champion Sunny Garcia (HAW) in Round 3 and then Perrow in Round 4. His upcoming quarterfinal opponent Bobby Martinez (USA) was among a bevy of standout surfers today.

People aren;t considering all the chop on that wave. It is alot more difficult than it looks. I don't remember how big it was, however if it was one of the largest set waves of the heat it usually garners a higher score on that alone. He also surfed right in the pocket on every hit and finsihed the ride strongly and smoothly on that last manuever. Agreed, It does not look anything like a ten on a glassy wave but again the judges are considering what is being done in the conditions given.

That's not a ten. He needs more board to do some proper power gouging, not that potato chip. You just need a little more volume on that board, then you'll look beautiful and radical, rather than 'sick', 'ill', 'wicked', 'gnarly', ...

@ToolsnFire That is what is so cool about this sport/art. I see amazing surfing fast and smooth on a choppy wave. He takes steep lines that many people wouldn't take, just like drawing a picture or writing a story-We all do it differently and have different opinions of what is amazing.

@transplant07 Slater has been ruling Lowers evr since he smoked everyone so bad in that Bud Tour event when it was 4-7 feet and absofuckinglutely epic. He reinvented ripping in that whole contest, especially the final. Black and white shows most of the good ones but there were more that they showed. Slater aint goin nowhere until he loses that competitve mindset of his so get used to it or shut the fuck up and let the man show us how its done. DIG FOOL?
