Bob met up with his family for a quick weekend trip to Medicine Lodge, Kansas, to brand calves. See video of the gather, sorting, roping and flanking process.
Of course it hurts to be burnt, no matter how thick the skin is. I saw a video of a poor bull being castrated and branded. He didn't make a sound during castration, only threw back his head in silent pain, but when he was branded he screamed out in agony.
Imagine burning yourself on a hot plate, and that you had to keep your hand on it until it burnt through your skin and into your flesh. We are not able to understand how the calves suffer, as long as we haven't felt it on our own body.
@mesantrop this doesnt really hurt the calves. THere hid is a helluva a lot thicker than that of humans. Branding prevents them from being stolen. Calves can crawl through fences and fences get broke by bull fights. Dont knock something until you have been around it.
Most states, I believe Kansas included, branding is required by law to show ownership...period. Your comment about building fences shows your ignorance on the matter. Have you ever been to a ranch or even seen one on TV? Of course every ranch has fences. Please don't bash the agricultural producers of this country for providing one of the most plentiful and safest food supplies in the world.
This is what the slave owners also said when voices raised against the branding and illtreatment of negroes. "They are our property, we do what we like with them." If you can bear to see an innocent creature suffer, it do something with you and your ability to identify with others.
What about building fences to keep your animals away from other hords, or use ear marks og freeze branding? There are other alternatives than burning the flesh of these poor calves.
Honestly nobody cares what you have to say. These cattle our property of the rancher. Without branding they'll get rustled. And as far as the castrating goes. Have you ever seen a hiefer in heat being chased by 30-40 bull calves. We do the best for our animals. And frankly were not going to start taking advice from Some one who is not in the saddle every day!
You had a great time, but what about the poor calves? Have you ever burnt your own flesh in a fire? It hurts horrible. And the calves are castrated as well. This is torture! Poor animals of the world - they are still slaves.
