During the last decade, there has been a significant shift in Latin American politics. Many of these countries have elected presidents, legislators, and other high profile offices from leftist parties. It is obvious that the popularity of the left has increased significantly, but it is not clear what is causing this trend. Many have attributed this "left turn" to the inability of these governments to meet social, economic, and political expectations. Luisa Blanco, assistant professor of economics at the School of Public Policy, intends to empirically identify and analyze the factors that spark these changes in Latin American governments.
