1983, the year Nelson Piquet returned to the top of the standings once more with his Brabham team. Facing an intense battle with Alain Prost in the Renault throughout the entire year, Piquet also had to fend off the challenge of a strong all-French Ferrari lineup of Rene Arnoux and Patrick Tambay, the latter enjoying a very popular win at Imola in front of the tifosi. It was the first year that a driver had won the title in a turbo powered car, setting the precedent for years to come. Nevertheless, in a season with eight different winners, the title went down to the wire in Kyalami, with Piquet seizing it by just two points.
