let's suppose that the Communists had been pressured into accepting Tibetan independence much like how Jiang Kaishek is forced by Russia to accept Mongolia's cessation from China and Qing empire being pressured to cede outer manchuria to Russia. Then very swiftly there will be riots all over china and a general revolution against the communists.
The communists were keen to not repeat this mistake. Mao fitted himself with the role of an hardcore anti-imperialist and it won him a shit load of support. The current government is keeping the same policy. Jiang Zemin's unpopular because he had a conciliatory( but practical) tone with the West. Hu Jintao in comparison is more popular because he always put himself in line with chinese nationalistic thinking. The actual source of support for Communists is they kept china from being bullied.
actually lookyeahhohon, the only thing that's keeping CCP alive is nationalism, the economy is of course is just one indicator people use to judge the CCP. China have been so thoroughly bullied and subjugated by foreign imperialist countries in the last 2 hundred years that what the people really care about is if its government can stand up to foreign countries. The Qing empire and the Chinese nationalists had a policy of appeasement and it led to their loss of support and their overthrow.
international law prohits illegal activity on another nation's EEC. There's no argument at all over territorial water or not, the argument is over whether U.S activities is legal or not. To China, spying on its military base is not legal. To U.S, apparently that's legal( but of course as long as its not other countries spying on U.S bases).
China has been tolerant? They have had numorous skirmishes against neighbors, building up its military, and are completely intolerant at Any US presence near by.
it doesnt matter where it was, even if the US troops landed on our soil, the government would still stick to the policy of relentlessly tolerating all kinds of invasion. this is because no country in this world take developing economy more seriously than China. offending even just a small nation like philipines will have an impact on trading other asian countries. most people dont understand why China has been so tolerant. it all comes down to economy which is the only thing that keeps CCP alive
