I have spent the past several years reverse engineering the linux kernel. This kernel only runs on an AMD 64 bit multicore machine. I have stripped out the 32 bit code as well as other architectures and software which I do not need. My tarball is 2 MB. It boots into a busybox/ext2 system and only provides basic functionality at this point. I plan to add back in USB and network support when I am done stripping the kernel. Any questions, please ask me?

  • @FuckImWhite I do like to camp.

  • Reverse engineering? Why do so if source code is open?

  • @solgar8 As a learning exercise.

  • @solgar8 I would say he did not reverse engineer it. He just stripped out a lot of stuff. Isn't that what the build system is for where you can deselect all the stuff you do not want?

  • @inclusivedisjunction Correct, I'm just doing this as a learning exercise. I use Linux in my everyday life and what better way to learn than to read through all the source code? I'm using the printks as a debugging tool right now since I stripped out the logging code as I really don't need that to boot the pc. I may add it back in later.

  • @MichaelRiter

Yeah, but I think he's talking about pruning the size of the source tree and not just the size of the compiled kernel. If he really wants to do something unique, he should null out all the printks.
