The author presents the story of a quest to find the last surviving children of slaves. She finds subjects all over the country, from Los Angeles to New Orleans to Virginia, presenting a view of post-Civil War life in America shared by few living Americans.
I totally enjoyed her book. It surprised me on some many levels, most fundamentally in its sensitive wisdom.

You have to read this book. I was fortunate enough to catch Ms Butler at a book signing at the Civil Rights museum in Memphis. The book will give you chills. It is so, so real.
