LED Spinning Top

An improved version of the LED spinning top published in December 2008 issue of Elektor. In our improved version, the top can be spun in either direction and will display a different message (unlike the Elektor version, which can only be spun in a fixed direction). We employ quadrature phase detection of earth's magnetic field to detect the direction of motion of the spinning top. Our spinning top uses a Tiny44 (14-pin SOIC) Microcontroller and runs off 2x1.5 AAA size batteries and uses a DC-DC converter to provide +5V power supply to the LEDs and the microcontroller
